Editorial Policy
What we will and will not do —
and why it matters.
Veriva exists because too many sustainability claims in hospitality go unverified, and too many travel platforms profit from the gap between what hotels say and what is actually true. This page explains how we protect our independence — and why that independence is the only thing that makes Veriva worth reading.
01 · The Founding Principle
What we will and will not do —
and why it matters.
Veriva earns revenue from hotel assessments and commercial research services. This is named clearly because it is the tension every reader of this policy has a right to understand. The answer is not to pretend it does not exist — it is to build structural separation between commercial relationships and editorial decisions, and to make that separation visible, documented, and enforceable.
A hotel that pays for a Compass assessment does not buy a positive profile. It buys an honest one. If the honest profile is positive, that is because the practice merits it. If it is not, we publish that too.
The test we apply to every editorial decision: would we be comfortable if a reader knew exactly how this decision was made?
02 · Absolute Commitments
What we will never do.
Accept advertising, sponsored editorial content, or paid placement presented as Veriva's independent opinion.
No commercial relationship entitles any party to editorial coverage or editorial influence over published content.
Accept a hosted visit in exchange for a guaranteed positive outcome.
Journalists may accept hosted visits — this is standard practice in travel journalism. Every hosted visit is disclosed in the published content. A hosted visit creates no right to a positive profile, no right to editorial approval, and no right to suppress a critical finding.
Allow a hotel to amend or approve editorial findings before publication
Properties may check factual accuracy — dates, names, figures. They do not have the right to change editorial judgments or assessment conclusions.
Suppress or remove a published Compass profile at a hotel's commercial request.
Profiles may be updated when practice changes or errors are corrected. They are not removed because a hotel is dissatisfied with an honest assessment.
Assign an assessor to a property where they have a material personal or financial relationship.
A cooling-off period of one year applies after any significant personal or commercial relationship with a property.
Write about a property in the Magazine for commercial reasons.
Every editorial story is selected on editorial merit alone. Commercial relationships create no entitlement to magazine coverage.
Allow investors, board members, or funders to instruct editorial decisions.
No investment agreement, advisory relationship, or funding arrangement grants any right to influence published content. See Section 05.
Assess properties involved in documented serious violations
of community land rights, forced displacement, child labour, or criminal environmental destruction — until those violations are resolved. See Section 06.
03 · Commercial Products — What Is Permitted
Independence protects editorial content. It does not prohibit commercial services.
Veriva operates multiple revenue streams. Editorial content is fully independent. Commercial products and services are a separate category — explicitly labelled and structurally separated from editorial decisions.
Compass Assessments
Hotels pay for the process
Assessment fees fund the Compass process. They do not purchase a positive outcome. The published profile is written by an independent assessor. The fee is the same regardless of the assessment result.
DMO Research Reports
Destinations may commission research
Tourism boards and destination organisations may commission structured research reports — regional assessments of regenerative practice, benchmark studies, data analysis. These are commercial research products, explicitly labelled as such. They create no editorial obligation and no right to influence published editorial decisions.
Partner Content
Always labelled, never editorial
Where Veriva publishes content supported or funded by a third party, this is always explicitly labelled as “Partner Content” or “Supported by.” It is never presented as Veriva’s independent editorial opinion. Readers always know who paid for what they are reading.
The fundamental rule: commercial relationships may fund Veriva's operations. They never purchase Veriva's editorial opinion.
04 · Editorial & Commercial Separation
How the two sides of Veriva are kept apart.
Veriva has two products: Veriva Magazine and the Veriva Compass Assessment. They share a platform and a set of values. They do not share a decision-making process.
Manages Founding Partner relationships, assessment pricing, renewal conversations, and DMO research contracts. Has no authority over editorial decisions.
Decides what is published in Veriva Magazine and how Compass profiles are written. Has no commercial incentive to produce a positive profile. Editorial decisions are not subject to commercial review.
A Founding Partner property may be featured in the Magazine — but only if an editor independently decides the story is editorially worth telling. Being a Founding Partner creates no entitlement to magazine coverage. Not being a Founding Partner does not exclude a property from magazine coverage.
05 · Investor & Funder Independence
Commercial backers have no editorial authority.
Veriva may accept investment, grants, accelerator support, or partnership funding. These commercial relationships do not grant any right to influence editorial decisions, assessment outcomes, or published content.
Legal basis
No investment agreement, shareholder agreement, advisory contract, or funding arrangement entered into by Veriva GmbH grants any investor, board member, or funder the right to instruct, veto, or amend editorial or assessment decisions. Any contractual clause purporting to grant such rights is void as contrary to editorial independence principles under German press law (Landespressegesetze) and EU fundamental rights protections for press freedom
(Article 11, EU Charter of Fundamental Rights; Article 5, Grundgesetz).
Where an investor, board member, or funder has a material financial interest in a property being assessed or written about, this conflict is disclosed publicly. The assessment or article in question is assigned to an assessor or journalist with no knowledge of the investor relationship.
Veriva’s editorial director has final authority over all editorial decisions. This authority cannot be overridden by commercial instruction.
06 · Scope & Exclusions
What Veriva covers — and what it will not.
Veriva assesses and covers independent boutique hospitality properties with a demonstrable commitment to regenerative practice. The following categories of property are excluded from assessment and from positive editorial coverage:
Properties with documented ongoing forced displacement of indigenous or local communities from land they inhabit or use.
Properties with documented child labour violations that have not been resolved and remediated.
Properties with criminal convictions for environmental destruction that remain unaddressed.
Properties in which ownership or management is demonstrably connected to serious human rights abuses in the destination.
Exclusions are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Where Veriva has published a profile and subsequently becomes aware of an exclusion ground, the profile is suspended pending review. Veriva may cover the story of a property’s exclusion editorially if it is in the public interest.
Properties operating in active conflict zones may be excluded at Veriva’s editorial discretion. Properties in politically sensitive contexts may be covered with appropriate editorial care and contextualisation.
07 · Assessment Protocol Independence
How the Compass assessment stays honest.
Assessor Independence
Who may assess what
An assessor may not assess a property where they have stayed as a paying or hosted guest in the previous 12 months, have a personal friendship with management, have a previous employment relationship, or have any financial interest. A one-year cooling-off period applies for material relationships.
Quality Control
How profiles are reviewed
Every published Compass profile is reviewed by a second editor before publication. A sample of profiles is subject to random independent quality review annually. Veriva maintains an internal register of all assessment decisions and the rationale behind them.
Hotel Appeals
Disputing an assessment finding
Hotels may dispute factual findings within 14 days of receiving a draft profile. Disputes must be supported by evidence. Editorial judgments — the assessor’s interpretation of evidence — are not subject to appeal. Where a factual dispute is upheld, the profile is corrected before publication.
Annual Review
Keeping profiles current
Every Compass profile is subject to annual review. A review is automatically triggered by: a verified complaint from a community member or guest; a material change in ownership or operational model; or evidence that contradicts the published profile. Badge removal decisions are published.
08 · Accuracy, Corrections & Right of Reply
Getting things right — and fixing them when we do not.
Journalistic Duty of Care — Sorgfaltspflicht (§ 6 BayPrG)
Veriva applies the professional duty of journalistic care (Sorgfaltspflicht) required under applicable German press law. Before publishing any critical finding or negative assessment, Veriva verifies all factual claims against available evidence and provides the subject — the hotel, property, or individual named — with a reasonable opportunity to respond. This pre-publication right of response is standard under German press law and is Veriva’s primary protection against claims of defamation (§§ 185–187 StGB). The subject’s response, or their failure to respond within the given timeframe, is documented internally.
Facts vs. Editorial Judgment — Art. 5 GG / Art. 11 EU Charter
Veriva distinguishes clearly between verifiable facts and editorial judgments. Verifiable facts must be accurate and are subject to correction. Editorial judgments — assessments of quality, regenerative practice, community benefit, and cultural integrity — are value assessments protected under freedom of expression (Meinungsfreiheit, Art. 5 Grundgesetz; Art. 11 EU Charter of Fundamental Rights). Critical assessment findings are identified as editorial judgments based on observed and documented evidence, not as objective facts. Where Veriva publishes a critical editorial judgment, this is the assessor’s reasoned professional opinion, not a statement of absolute truth.
Before publication, all factual claims in Compass profiles and Magazine articles are verified against available evidence. When Veriva makes a factual error, it is corrected promptly, transparently, and with a published correction note. Veriva does not delete corrections or rewrite content silently.
Properties operating in active conflict zones may be excluded at Veriva’s editorial discretion. Properties in politically sensitive contexts may be covered with appropriate editorial care and contextualisation.
Right of Reply — Gegendarstellung (§ 11 BayPrG)
Under Bavarian press law, individuals and organisations have the right to request a published counter-statement (Gegendarstellung) in response to factual claims published by Veriva. The counter-statement must relate to factual claims only — not to editorial opinions, value judgments, or assessment findings. Requests must be submitted within one month of publication to editorial@veriva.travel. Veriva publishes valid counter-statements within 5 working days for online content, alongside the original content and without editorial comment unless legally permitted. The right of reply does not apply to editorial opinions or assessment judgments. Court-ordered counter-statements (einstweilige Verfügung) are complied with immediately.
Factual errors: editorial@veriva.travel · Response within 5 working days · Right of reply requests: same address.
09 · Sources & Community Testimony
How we use sources — and how we protect them.
Community testimony is primary evidence in Veriva assessments — not colour, not anecdote. The perspectives of people who live in the places Veriva assesses and who are not employed by the hotel are given formal and documented weight in every assessment.
Veriva protects the identities of community sources when they request it. Names and identifying details are not published without explicit consent.
Raw community testimony is never shared with the hotels being assessed. Source information is stored separately from published profiles.
When community testimony contradicts what a hotel has told us, the contradiction is named honestly in the published profile. It is not resolved in the hotel's favour by default.
Veriva journalists and assessors have the right to refuse to disclose source identities under applicable source protection law (§ 53 StPO, Germany). This protection is actively maintained.
Legal basis — Source Protection
Under German law, journalists have a statutory right to refuse to testify about sources (journalistisches Zeugnisverweigerungsrecht, § 53 StPO). Veriva implements source protection through: encrypted separate storage of community testimony; a strict no-disclosure policy; and contractual protection for all contributing journalists and assessors. Community sources are informed of these protections before they provide testimony.
10 · Conflicts of Interest
When interests conflict — and how we handle it.
All Veriva journalists and assessors are required to disclose any personal, financial, or professional relationship with a property, destination, or organisation they are covering or assessing — including previous employment, personal friendships, financial investments, or family relationships.
Where a conflict exists, the journalist or assessor is reassigned. Where reassignment is not possible and the story or assessment is editorially important, the conflict is disclosed within the published content.
Founder disclosure:
Veriva’s founder has worked in hotel industry PR, media sales, and previously operated Mamis Travel Guide, a family travel platform that maintained commercial relationships with some independent boutique hotels. Properties previously listed on Mamis Travel Guide are not excluded from Veriva coverage or assessment — but assessments of such properties are assigned to independent assessors with no knowledge of the prior relationship.
11 · Gifts, Hospitality & Hosted Visits
The rules on what Veriva journalists may accept.
Veriva has two products: Veriva Magazine and the Veriva Compass Assessment. They share a platform and a set of values. They do not share a decision-making process.
Monetary limit applies
Veriva journalists and assessors may not accept gifts with a market value above €30 from any property, tourism board, or hospitality brand. Gifts above this threshold must be declined or returned. Local artisan products of modest value given as part of a cultural experience are not subject to this limit.
Permitted with full disclosure
Journalists may accept hosted visits from properties. This is standard practice in travel journalism and the only realistic model for covering distant destinations. Every hosted visit is disclosed in the published content with the phrase “This visit was hosted by [property name].” A hosted visit creates no right to a positive profile, no right to editorial approval, and no right to suppress critical findings.
The hospitality accepted during a hosted visit — meals, accommodation, activities — does not require separate disclosure beyond the standard hosted-visit statement. Where the value of a hosted visit is unusually high (private jet, exclusive access), this is noted in the published content.
12 · Social Media Policy
Veriva journalists and assessors may post about properties on their personal social media platforms subject to the following rules:
Veriva assesses and covers independent boutique hospitality properties with a demonstrable commitment to regenerative practice. The following categories of property are excluded from assessment and from positive editorial coverage:
Hosted visits must be disclosed on any social media post about the property, using standard disclosure language (#hosted, #pressvisit, or equivalent platform-standard disclosure).
No paid social media promotion of properties may be accepted by Veriva journalists or assessors in connection with their Veriva work. Personal sponsored content arrangements with properties Veriva covers are a conflict of interest and must be disclosed to the editorial team.
Compass assessment findings may not be disclosed on social media before the profile is published on Veriva.
These rules apply to content posted during and after a visit to a property in connection with Veriva work. Journalists' pre-existing personal relationships with properties are subject to the conflicts of interest policy (Section 10).
13 · Intellectual Property & Licensing
Who owns what.
Veriva has two products: Veriva Magazine and the Veriva Compass Assessment. They share a platform and a set of values. They do not share a decision-making process.
Veriva holds editorial rights
Articles and editorial content commissioned and published by Veriva are licensed to Veriva under terms agreed with each contributing journalist. The journalist retains the moral right to be credited as the author. Veriva does not claim to own content produced by contributing journalists beyond the scope of the publishing licence.
Independent assessment, shared use
Compass profiles are authored by Veriva assessors and published by Veriva. Hotels whose properties have been assessed may reproduce their Compass profile summary and badge on their own channels with attribution to Veriva. They may not alter the text or remove findings. A Compass badge may be displayed by assessed properties for the duration of their valid assessment period.
14 · Data Protection
How we handle data — and who it belongs to.
Veriva GmbH processes personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable German data protection law (BDSG). This section summarises the key principles; the full Privacy Policy is available separately.
GM questionnaire & assessment responses
Data collected through the GM Place Mirror Questionnaire and Compass Call is processed for the purpose of producing a Compass profile. Raw questionnaire responses are retained for a maximum of five years after the last assessment. Hotels may request access to their own data and request deletion subject to legal retention obligations. Raw assessment data is never sold to third parties.
Enhanced protection applies
Community testimony collected during assessments is treated as sensitive data. It is stored encrypted, separately from published profiles, with access limited to the assessor and editorial director. Where community sources have requested anonymisation, their identifying information is destroyed after the profile is published. Community testimony is never shared with the assessed hotel or any third party.
Legal basis & contact
Data controller: Veriva Travel GmbH, Munich, Germany. Legal basis for processing: legitimate interests (editorial journalism, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR); contract performance (assessment services, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Data subjects may exercise rights of access, rectification, erasure, portability, and objection by contacting: privacy@veriva.travel. The right to lodge a complaint with the Bavarian Data Protection Authority (BayLDA) is available to all data subjects.
Journalistic Data Processing — Medienprivileg (§ 23 BDSG)
Personal data processed for purely journalistic and editorial purposes is subject to the press privilege (Medienprivileg) under § 23 BDSG. This provision limits the application of certain GDPR rights — including the right of access, rectification, erasure, and restriction — where exercising those rights would compromise journalistic sources, editorial independence, or the public interest in the published content. Veriva invokes the Medienprivileg specifically to protect: the identities of community sources named in unpublished assessment notes; internal editorial deliberation documents; and source information subject to journalistic confidentiality. This privilege does not limit GDPR rights over commercial or non-journalistic data.
Separate legal documents
This Editorial Policy does not constitute Veriva’s full legal documentation. Two additional documents are required under German law and are published separately: the Impressum (§ 5 TMG / § 18 MStV) containing full company details, commercial register information, and VAT number; and the Datenschutzerklärung (full Privacy Policy) detailing all data processing activities, cookie usage, and data subject rights. Both are accessible via the website footer.
15 · AI & Editorial Content
Our position on AI-generated content.
Veriva uses AI tools in the research and drafting stages of editorial work. No article or Compass profile is published as AI-generated content without human editorial judgment, substantial human revision, and final editorial sign-off by a named journalist or assessor.
Every published piece on Veriva carries the name of the human responsible for it. That person stands behind what is published. AI does not. Veriva does not use AI to generate community testimony, simulate assessment findings, or produce content that purports to represent human judgment it did not produce.
16 · Complaints & Accountability
How to challenge what we publish.
If you believe Veriva has published something inaccurate, unfair, or in breach of this policy, we want to hear from you. We acknowledge all complaints within three working days and respond substantively within ten. Where a complaint leads to a correction or change, we publish a note explaining what changed and why.
Where a complaint cannot be resolved through direct correspondence, Veriva will engage an independent third party to review the dispute. The costs of independent review are shared equally between Veriva and the complainant.
Responsible Editor — Verantwortlicher Redakteur
In accordance with German press law (Landespressegesetze), the responsible editor (Verantwortlicher Redakteur) for Veriva’s editorial content is: Laetitia Hörnler, Veriva Travel GmbH, Munich, Germany. Contact: editorial@veriva.travel.
Version 1.0 · Published June 2026 · Reviewed annually · Next review: June 2027 · Questions: editorial@veriva.travel
"I built Veriva because I believe the travel industry needs a platform that is genuinely accountable to the places it writes about — not to the properties that advertise in it. This policy is my attempt to make that accountability visible. If you ever believe we have fallen short of it, please tell us. The only way to keep this honest is to be challenged."
